Downloadable slip reads: A raukura is, literally speaking, a red feather plume. In the Māori language, the word raukura is used in many different metaphorical ways. It was a treasured prize, often worn as an adornment, and so the word raukura can be used to refer to something valued dearly. It can also be used to refer to a graduate (the term is now routinely used to refer to graduates of Māori immersion schools). The raukura on the front of the card draws on each of these metaphors. The inside of the card acknowledges the pursuit of education, and then uses the raukura metaphor to say something along the lines of: with all of that learning, you will truly be an adornment for the people that you represent.
